The Golf Short Game Bible – A Must Have!

Posted by Steve Snead

So why is the short game bible a must have?

Well, because we golfers have all made the same mistake. We get into the game of golf, and in our attempts to improve, we generally spend hours and hours, at the driving range, beating balls into an open field. Trying to improve our swings, our games, and our scores.

What David Pelz uncovers in this 430 page, comprehensive guide to the short game, is that, we all go about it in the wrong way. He explains to us, scientifically, after years of research and number crunching on the PGA Tour, that the top earners in the game, are the players with the best short games. Not the longest hitters, nor the best putters.

Mr Pelz contends, with scientific proof, the ‘Unified Swing’ theory. That is that the short game swing is the exact same swing that you use with any club in your bag. He insists that Golf is made up of 5 games, with 3 swings. The Power Swing, The Short Game Swing (which is one of finesse) and the Putting Swing. Obviously, the closer you can get the ball to the pin from within 100 Yards, is going to effect your scoring. Which is where the short game swing comes in.

Even if you are new to the game, you’ll already have learnt one thing and that is, that it’s easier to hit your shorter irons straighter than any other club. However, when you are within a 100 yards, can you control the distance? It’s vital that you can. Let’s say you have 64 Yards to the pin. There’s a good chance that you could hit it straight at the pin, but can you nail the distance. If you fly it straight over the flag, but 6 Yards long, from where you’re standing it’s going to look like a great shot. Trouble is you just left yourself an 18 foot putt. Which Dave Pelz will tell you that, not only are you guaranteed to miss that first putt, but you are more likely to three putt. So it makes sense, that you learn to hit it 64 Yards in the first place, doesn’t it? Even more importantly, to be able to hit a 68 Yard Shot on the next hole if you have to.

That’s where this book comes in………

An Amazon Review : Mike Davis of Ohio

This is far and away the best instructional book in golf, not to mention the short game on which this book is all about. No more “half swings” or “partial swings” which in my experience golfers tend to decelerate on because a lack of confidence in swing strength. The 3×4 system is absolutely the best way to KNOW you have the right club and the swinging the right speed to get it to the pin. Book covers every conceivable lie and ball position needed for that lie. Also shows how to “plan” your shot with type of grass, direction of grain and landing surface. Because of the length and the need to “study” this book I would only recommend it to golfers who are serious about their game. Short game was weakest part of my game but after only a month with this book it has become my strongest, its that fast. Went from an 18 handicap index to a 12.

The Golf Short Game

Posted by Steve Snead

If you really want to improve your Golf short game, which is anything within 100 yards of the flag, then first you need the right equipment in the bag to do so. As well as the best book on the short game ever written, Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible.

Gary player once said that, “70% of shots are played within 70 Yards of the green”. This was later, scientifically proven by David Pelz in his fantastic book, The Short Game Bible. Mr Pelz set out to find out “Why the top earners on the PGA tour, were the top earners”. What he found out was that it was their ability, to get it closest to the hole, from 100 yards and in. This even outweighed their ability to putt! The top putters on the PGA tour, were not the top earners.

So do you have the clubs in your bag to cover 70% of your shots? My guess is….Probably Not!

Most beginners and high handicappers only carry one wedge. Consequently, they try to hit anywhere between 10 and 100 Yards with the same club. This makes accurate distance control, on every short shot, virtually impossible. If you’re such a golfer, then it really is time to consider adding one, or two more wedges to your bag. If this means the sacrifice of one of your long irons, in order to confirm to the 14 club rule, then so be it. After all, how often or how well do you use that 3 iron anyway?

With various wedge lofts available, (anywhere from 52 to 64 degrees), from all of the major manufacturers. Consider three wedges with a four degree separation, i.e. 52, 56 and 60 degrees of loft.

Now… Armed with your 3 wedges. You’ll need to get down to your local park and practice. How much should you practice? Well, doesn’t it make sense that if 70% of your shots are going to be golf short game shots, then 70% of the amount of time that you spend practicing, should be specifically on this type of shot? Yet I find that very few golfers do. Instead they’d rather beat balls at the driving range, often with no specific target, or goal in mind.

So trust me on this. Get to the park this weekend. Take a 100 Yard tape measure, and spend some time getting comfortable with your new wedges. Hit nice easy (80%) swings with all three of your wedges. Hit 20 Balls with each wedge. Discount the furthest and shortest five balls. The center measurement of your cluster of ten balls is your average for that wedge. Write it down and put it in your bag.

Try and do this once a week and you’ll soon find that your grouping will get tighter, and more consistent. Not only that, but on the course, your golf short game will soon be the envy of your golf buddies.
