Golf Swing Aid – Talking Balls!

Posted by Steve Snead

I just love these balls.

They allow you to practice practically anywhere, and are the official golf ball for ‘Urban Golf’ competition.

What’s great about them is that you get a third of the actual flight of your real golf ball. Thererfore, you can make your backyard practice meaningfu,l in terms of distance, while at the same time, keeping your word to the wife, that you won’t be breaking any windows.

You can even draw anf fade them. Way better than those awful whiffle balls, that give you next to no feed back.

AlmostGOLF Point3 Practice Golf Balls feature:

  • Solid core of cross-linked foam creates enough weight (13.5 grams) for limited distance performance
  • 1/8 mm dimples for true trajectory and flight
  • Solid core and internal pressure simulate real ball flight
  • Travels approximately one-third the distance of a normal golf ball
  • Perfectly balanced for true spin, trajectory, accuracy
  • Extremely soft, making it backyard safe
  • Out-performs wiffle and blown plastic balls
  • So do yourself a favour and try these Dave Pelz Almost Golf Point 3 Balls. Even our cats love ‘em!

The Golf Short Game Bible – A Must Have!

    Posted by Steve Snead

So why is the short game bible a must have?

Well, because we golfers have all made the same mistake. We get into the game of golf, and in our attempts to improve, we generally spend hours and hours, at the driving range, beating balls into an open field. Trying to improve our swings, our games, and our scores.

What David Pelz uncovers in this 430 page, comprehensive guide to the short game, is that, we all go about it in the wrong way. He explains to us, scientifically, after years of research and number crunching on the PGA Tour, that the top earners in the game, are the players with the best short games. Not the longest hitters, nor the best putters.

Mr Pelz contends, with scientific proof, the ‘Unified Swing’ theory. That is that the short game swing is the exact same swing that you use with any club in your bag. He insists that Golf is made up of 5 games, with 3 swings. The Power Swing, The Short Game Swing (which is one of finesse) and the Putting Swing. Obviously, the closer you can get the ball to the pin from within 100 Yards, is going to effect your scoring. Which is where the short game swing comes in.

Even if you are new to the game, you’ll already have learnt one thing and that is, that it’s easier to hit your shorter irons straighter than any other club. However, when you are within a 100 yards, can you control the distance? It’s vital that you can. Let’s say you have 64 Yards to the pin. There’s a good chance that you could hit it straight at the pin, but can you nail the distance. If you fly it straight over the flag, but 6 Yards long, from where you’re standing it’s going to look like a great shot. Trouble is you just left yourself an 18 foot putt. Which Dave Pelz will tell you that, not only are you guaranteed to miss that first putt, but you are more likely to three putt. So it makes sense, that you learn to hit it 64 Yards in the first place, doesn’t it? Even more importantly, to be able to hit a 68 Yard Shot on the next hole if you have to.

That’s where this book comes in………

An Amazon Review : Mike Davis of Ohio

This is far and away the best instructional book in golf, not to mention the short game on which this book is all about. No more “half swings” or “partial swings” which in my experience golfers tend to decelerate on because a lack of confidence in swing strength. The 3×4 system is absolutely the best way to KNOW you have the right club and the swinging the right speed to get it to the pin. Book covers every conceivable lie and ball position needed for that lie. Also shows how to “plan” your shot with type of grass, direction of grain and landing surface. Because of the length and the need to “study” this book I would only recommend it to golfers who are serious about their game. Short game was weakest part of my game but after only a month with this book it has become my strongest, its that fast. Went from an 18 handicap index to a 12.

iPhone App for Golf Swing Tempo

    Posted by Steve Snead

You will see from my blogs that I am a huge fan of the underrated subject of golf swing speed, as well as golf swing tempo.

Here’s an application for those of you out there who are lucky enough to have an iPhone. It is without a doubt, the cheapest (Not including iPhone purchase of course) Golf Swing Aid that you will see on our blog.

At an amazing $1.99 at time of writing, this looks like the golf swing aid bargain of the year!

It would appear to follow the exact same principle as underlined in Golf Tour Tempo. Why wouldn’t it….after all, it’s proven.

Set your ideal golf swing tempo on your iPhone. Then practice your swing as you swing in sync to the tempo. Use MyGolfSwing anywhere – in your office, in your home or anywhere you can swing your arms to its tempo, even without a club. Use MyGolfSwing on the driving range, practice green or even while you are playing golf. You can even set it up to repeat, for the same number of balls that you just ordered on the range……Insane!

What I love as well, is that you can actually select the PGA pro of your choice, from the library, so that you can swing to the exact tempo as, Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia, Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, etc.

You can see a demo of this app in action, as well as purchase the download at www.mygolfswing.biz

I’m counting on some of you lucky iPhone owners to filed test this app on my behalf.

Please let me know how you get on with it.

Golf Swing Tempo – Is A Golf Fundamental

    Posted by Steve Snead

Without a doubt, golf swing tempo IS a fundamental of the golf swing. However, it would appear to be the most overlooked and underwritten about. What doesn’t help, is that half of what I read on the subject is just nonsense anyway. If I were a high handicapper, some of these articles would leave me more mystified about Swing Tempo than when I started them. Here is an excerpt from such an article….”Get into a rhythm with your swing by counting one on the way back, two at the top (give it a little pause) and three on the way down.” Now I ask you, do you understand this. I know I don’t. If you and I both counted to three, and it were timed, there’s a good chance that we would not both do it, in the same time frame. Our nature would affect the count. Would your little pause be longer or shorter than my little pause? It will be our brains that are doing the counting, and it’s our brains that get us into so much trouble, out on the course, in the first place. Will we count to three in the same calm way, when we are facing a 150 yard carry over a lake to a bunker guarded green?…….I think not! I don’t know that I ever saw Tiger, Phil or VJ taking this little pause. The article goes on further to suggest that, when practicing at the range, this pause should be for TWO SECONDS! Now I ask you, does this sound like Golf Swing Tempo training? If you are going to hold at the top of the back swing for 2 seconds, then why not just cut out the middleman. Yes, that’s right, forget the whole address the ball, waggle, smooth take away and the rest. Just start your swing at the top. Like facing a pitcher with a baseball bat in your hands. Trust me though, you can kiss swing speed Goodbye! If you are a golfer, then I’m sure that it’s safe to say, that if I were to ask you to write a list of the fundamentals of golf, you would probably hand me a list that included: * Grip * Posture * Ball Position * Alignment * Pre-swing Routine …and you wouldn’t be wrong. I’d be mightily impressed. I could take those fundamentals to the range with a bunch of books and magazines and work on them. But sooner or later I’m going to ask you, (Because I’m an inquisitive kind of guy), “This is all great stuff, but how fast should I swing?” Because after all, we are always hearing about club head speed, and how it affects distance. So let us add Swing Tempo to our list of golf fundamentals. In fact, lets put it in 3rd Place, right behind grip and alignment. The reason being is that, if you have a basic understanding of swing technique, then Swing Tempo is the glue that holds it all together. Pausing at the top of your back swing, for anywhere between a pause and 2 seconds is the stuff that will bring it crashing down. In fact this will more than likely cause you to ‘Cast,’ or come over the top in the swing. With good tempo, the left knee should be starting it’s Downswing move to the left, just as the hands and club are reaching the top of the back swing. I don’t disagree totally with the counting system. What you need though is a device to dictate the count, a device that is external. A device that is not your brain. Be it one of the many golf swing tempo devices, a simple and inexpensive metronome, or a piece of music with a beat that you can swing to. If you are an Iphone user, there is even an application that you can download exactly for the purpose. Now it is often said that most high handicappers swing too fast. This is not, in fact, the case. Most swing too slow, but their swings look fast because they lack a decent tempo. Either a really quick take away that then slows on the way to impact, or the reverse. Ernie Els’ ‘Big Easy’ swing, is in fact, exactly the same tempo as Phil Mickelson’s and VJ Singh’s. Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player’s were slightly faster. Where the tour pros do not vary, is in the ratio of their swings. THIS IS KEY! It was only first truly written about in John Novosel’s excellent, 2004 book, Tour Tempo – Golf’s Last Secret Finally Revealed. The tour pros ALL swing at a 3 To 1 Ratio. However long they take getting to the top of their back swing is 3 Times that of getting the club head back to impact! So there you go. Probably the simplest fundamental you ever read. Get to the range with some type of timing device, and swing to a 3 TO 1 Ratio. The magic thing about it is, that you will find yourself so engrossed with listening to the Beats, that all other swing thoughts (particularly negative ones), will leave your head. Try different tempos (NOT RATIOS) and find the one that suits your personality. When you have, you can take your new tempo onto the course, where my guess is, you’ll swing with a new found confidence.

    The Golf Short Game

    Posted by Steve Snead

If you really want to improve your Golf short game, which is anything within 100 yards of the flag, then first you need the right equipment in the bag to do so. As well as the best book on the short game ever written, Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible.

Gary player once said that, “70% of shots are played within 70 Yards of the green”. This was later, scientifically proven by David Pelz in his fantastic book, The Short Game Bible. Mr Pelz set out to find out “Why the top earners on the PGA tour, were the top earners”. What he found out was that it was their ability, to get it closest to the hole, from 100 yards and in. This even outweighed their ability to putt! The top putters on the PGA tour, were not the top earners.

So do you have the clubs in your bag to cover 70% of your shots? My guess is….Probably Not!

Most beginners and high handicappers only carry one wedge. Consequently, they try to hit anywhere between 10 and 100 Yards with the same club. This makes accurate distance control, on every short shot, virtually impossible. If you’re such a golfer, then it really is time to consider adding one, or two more wedges to your bag. If this means the sacrifice of one of your long irons, in order to confirm to the 14 club rule, then so be it. After all, how often or how well do you use that 3 iron anyway?

With various wedge lofts available, (anywhere from 52 to 64 degrees), from all of the major manufacturers. Consider three wedges with a four degree separation, i.e. 52, 56 and 60 degrees of loft.

Now… Armed with your 3 wedges. You’ll need to get down to your local park and practice. How much should you practice? Well, doesn’t it make sense that if 70% of your shots are going to be golf short game shots, then 70% of the amount of time that you spend practicing, should be specifically on this type of shot? Yet I find that very few golfers do. Instead they’d rather beat balls at the driving range, often with no specific target, or goal in mind.

So trust me on this. Get to the park this weekend. Take a 100 Yard tape measure, and spend some time getting comfortable with your new wedges. Hit nice easy (80%) swings with all three of your wedges. Hit 20 Balls with each wedge. Discount the furthest and shortest five balls. The center measurement of your cluster of ten balls is your average for that wedge. Write it down and put it in your bag.

Try and do this once a week and you’ll soon find that your grouping will get tighter, and more consistent. Not only that, but on the course, your golf short game will soon be the envy of your golf buddies.
